Structural Tree sands

Structural Tree sands

Structural Tree sand was initially researched at a university in Amsterdam in the mid-1980s to provide a solution to installation of semi-mature trees into urban areas where compaction and subsidence was an issue.

Tree sand acts as a structural planting medium to allow semi-mature trees to thrive in dense urban areas and allows the tree pit to withstand heavy footfall without any problems with subsidence. The minute gaps between the sand allows air to flow through to the roots and the compost and fertiliser feeds the tree to ensure effective growing conditions.

Heicom approached Bourne Amenity back in 2000 to act as a UK partner and produce the specific blend of materials to match the specification put forward by the university. We are one of only two UK producers licenced to sell the Heicom brand, and the sole producer in the South of England.

"We have used Bourne Amenity products for our urban tree planting schemes across London and have always found their materials and service to be of the highest standing"
Michael Gargan, Contracts Manager, Street Tree Care Ltd.

Bourne Amenity also blend and produce our own brand of Tree sand that has been rigorously tested and acts as a more economical version of Heicom. See the Technical Data section on the left for analysis of both materials.

More recently, companies have been installing plastic root cell (sometimes known as strata cells) systems into tree pits, which can offer the resilience to heavy footfall, whilst allowing the tree to spread its roots into a more natural growing medium (i.e. TS1, TS6 multi-purpose topsoils). Both practices are valid and we would welcome a call to discuss your particular requirements.

Note: When calculating your tree sand requirements we usually allow for 1.6 tonne per cubic metre, as the material needs to be well compacted at various stages in the installation process.

Call us on 01797 252299 to discuss your site specific requirements and topsoil specifications.
