Sterilised Soil

Sterilised Soil

The challenge of Sterilised Soils

Can you effectively sterilise a living breathing topsoil, and for how long does the resultant material remain truly sterile? Sterilised soil is used traditionally by the nursery and garden centre industries to ensure that there are no weed seeds or pathogens present to compete with their plants.

Heat and chemical treatment are the two methods currently employed to create a sterile growing media. However, heat treament tends to also strip the soil of any and all of its organic matter. We used our top dressing kiln to sterilise a standard BS3882:2015 topsoil and heated the material up to 200 degrees. The result was a very dusty material that was no doubt sterile, but devoid of any organic matter to begin its re-birth as a planting medium.

However, through our clay brick crushing process (used to produce substrates for the roof garden market), we were left with a 2mm to dust reject clay material. We left a large stockpile of this material in our yard for over a year to guage its sterile properties, and as expected there was no sign of life. This sterile clay loam material is then blended with a PAS100 10mm green waste compost (sterile by nature of the PAS100 standard) to create our sterilised planting loam.

We have started selling this product into the nursery market and it is currently available in small 25kg bags, bulk (tonne) bags and loose loads.

Please call into the office for more information about this and anoth other of our bespoke soil blends.
