April '15 - BS3882:2015 Topsoil standard released
It has been in the pipeline for months now, but the new 2015 version of the 8832 British Standard for topsoil has been published and will be tested against from April onwards.
The amendments to the actual testing parameters are fairly minor, but should see more producers (especially those of manufactured-compost based topsoil’s) falling in line with these new standards.
More useful may be the information within the document relating to recomended sampling methods for topsoil which sets out proper procedures for producers. There is also a section on stripping topsoil and the best practice for storing topsoil to help avoid any structural damage to the material.
BS3882 was last amended in 2007 and has been the staple diet for soil testing houses but it was felt that with the abundance of manufactured over as-dug topsoil’s coming into the market, the parameters had to be slightly widened to accommodate the new trend. Manufactures who used PAS100 compost to make the soils were struggling to keep certain levels with the NPK parameters of the BS3882:2007 version and hence a revision was required.
The BS3882:2015 standard is available from the BS1 website and it doesn't come cheap to non-members (£174.00 for the full pdf version). However once the standard becomes more commonplace then it should be more readily available as was the case with the 2007 version.
All of our TS6 and TS1 topsoil will now be tested against the new BS3882:2015 version so please consult our technical page for more information
